Ombudsman (Amendment ) Act 2012

Information for Public Bodies under remit from 1 May 2013

The Ombudsman (Amendment) Act 2012 brought over 180 additional public bodies under the remit of the Ombudsman with effect from 1st May 2013.

The additional bodies now under the Ombudsman's remit include all publicly funded third level education institutions, including the Universities, Vocational Education Committees, FÁS, the Legal Aid Board, the National Treatment Purchase Fund, the State Examinations Commission, the Student Grant Appeals Board, the National Transport Authority, the Family Support Agency, Sustainable Energy Ireland, and a range of other public bodies. The Ombudsman has been empowered to examine complaints in relation to the administrative actions of the additional bodies which occured on or after 1st May 2013.

The Office also appointed staff to act as Sectoral Leads for each new area. Their contacts details are set out below.

The Ombudsman publishes guidelines for public bodies in order to support them in the provision of their services.
