PROFILEMR. KEVIN MURPHY, OMBUDSMAN
Mr. Kevin Murphy was appointed Ombudsman with effect from 1st November 1994 by the President of Ireland on the nomination of each of the Houses of the Oireachtas (the Dáil and Seanad). Prior to his appointment, Mr Murphy was Secretary in charge of the Public Service at the Department of Finance.
During his eleven years as Secretary, Mr Murphy was responsible for all matters relating to the management, organisation, staffing and reform of the Irish service. He represented the Government as employer in the negotiations which resulted in the various national economic and social programmes. He was also Chairman of the Top Level Appointments Committee which advises the Government on appointments to the very top levels of the Irish civil service.
Mr. Murphy is from Dublin, married with four children and holds the degree of B.Sc (Economics). He is a member of the Public Offices Commission set up under the Ethics in Public Office Act, 1995 and of the Dáil Constituency Commission and is Information Commissioner under the Freedom of Information Act which came into effect in April 1998.
