Welcome to the website of the Office of the Ombudsman. On this website we explain what we do and how we do it. If you have any difficulties finding information on the site or any suggestions as to how the site might be improved please contact us.
Role of the Ombudsman
The Ombudsman's staff examine complaints concerning the administrative actions of Government Departments, the Health Service Executive (including public hospitals such as the Mater Hospital and St. James's Hospital), local authorities and An Post. The "Make a Complaint" section of our website contains details of bodies you can complain against and how to make your complaint. Our website also has a facility which will allow you to make your complaint online.
The Ombudsman may also investigate complaints concerning compliance by public bodies and some other bodies with Part 3 of the Disability Act 2005. Details of how to make such a complaint can be found in the "Disability Act 2005" section of this site.
Certain bodies e.g. financial institutions, An Gardaí Síochána, Defence Forces, third level colleges and universities are outside the Ombudsman's remit. Our website has links, however, to other complaint handling bodies which may be able to assist you.
